Alex Myers is an author, educator, and speaker whose work explores identity, belonging, and the ways we understand ourselves and one another. Through fiction, nonfiction, and conversation, Alex brings a storyteller’s perspective to questions of gender, history, and what it means to live authentically.
Finding His Own Path
Born and raised in Paris, Maine, Alex Myers grew up with a love of reading, language, and storytelling. As a teenager, he attended Phillips Exeter Academy, where his own story would take an important turn.
In 1995, before his senior year, Alex came out as transgender. He returned to Exeter as Alex, becoming the first openly transgender student in the school’s history. The experience of navigating identity, expectation, and belonging during those formative years would later inform both his work as an educator and many of the questions he explores as a writer.
Turning Experience Into Action
At Harvard University, Alex studied Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations while continuing to advocate for greater understanding and inclusion. He worked to have gender identity added to the University’s nondiscrimination policy, helping create change that would extend beyond his own experience.
Alex went on to earn a master’s degree in religion from Brown University and build a career in education. Over the years, he has worked with students, educators, and school communities to better understand gender identity and create more inclusive environments—bringing together personal experience, thoughtful dialogue, and a deep belief in the transformative power of education.
Stories That Challenge Expectations
Alex’s path as an author took shape at the Vermont College of Fine Arts, where he earned an MFA in fiction and began work on his first novel, Revolutionary. Published in 2014, the novel reimagines the story of Deborah Sampson and was named a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award for Transgender Fiction.
Since then, Alex has continued to explore questions of identity, gender, history, and belonging across fiction and nonfiction. His books range from historical and contemporary novels to Supporting Transgender Students, a practical guide informed by decades of experience in education. Across genres, his work invites readers to question familiar assumptions, see the world from new perspectives, and consider the many ways we become who we are.
Writing, education, and advocacy have always been interconnected in Alex’s work. Each informs the others, creating opportunities to tell meaningful stories, challenge assumptions, and build greater understanding.
