Experience That Goes Beyond the Stage
Alex has spent decades working with students, educators, schools, and communities around questions of gender identity and inclusion. He began transitioning in 1995 while a student at Phillips Exeter Academy and has since worked with schools and colleges to educate students, faculty, and administrators and help institutions create more gender-inclusive environments.
His perspective is also deeply informed by his work as an educator and author. Alex has taught English, served in educational leadership, and written both fiction exploring gender and identity and the practical guide Supporting Transgender Students.

Topics can include classrooms, athletics, facilities, policies, language, and the everyday experiences of transgender and gender-nonconforming students.
From the Revolutionary War to medieval legend to contemporary life, Alex’s fiction explores characters navigating the expectations placed upon them by gender, society, and history. In this talk, Alex discusses the research and creative process behind bringing these stories to life, the relationship between historical and contemporary ideas about gender, and what fiction allows us to understand about identity across time.
